The first locks are known to have appeared as early as ancient Babylon and Egypt. That's over 6 thousand years ago! They were actually once made of wood and would use a toothbrush-shaped key. Now of course there were downsides such as the weight of the key, but you have to admit, for its time, its quite impressive!
